Block paving is a popular choice for driveways, patios, and garden paths, for good reason. It’s durable, attractive, and offers a neat, classic finish that complements a wide range of homes. Block paving continues to be one of the most popular surfacing choices for our clients across Shropshire and Staffordshire. But as with any outdoor surface, it doesn’t stay looking pristine forever. Moss, algae, weeds, and general grime can all build up over time. So, should you jet wash block paving to get it back to its best?
In short: yes – but with care. Here are our professional hints and tips…
Jet Washing Block Paving: Pros and Cons
Jet washing (or pressure washing) is one of the quickest and most effective ways to clean block paving. It can strip away years of dirt and staining in minutes, revealing the original colour and texture of your blocks.
However, if not done properly, pressure washing can also damage the surface or dislodge the sand between the joints of the block paving. That jointing sand plays a vital role in keeping your blocks stable and preventing weed growth, so it’s important to replace it if any is washed away.
Tips for Pressure Washing Your Block Paving
If you're planning to jet wash your block paving, here are a few pointers to help you do it properly:
Clear the Area First
Remove any furniture, pots or loose debris. Give the area a good brush to get rid of loose dirt and leaves.
Use a Fan Nozzle, Not a Pinpoint Jet
We’ve talked in the past about the importance of using the correct nozzle when pressure washing tarmac driveways. The same applies to block paved drives and patios. A wide spray is much gentler on the blocks and helps avoid displacing the jointing sand. Keep the nozzle moving and avoid holding it too close to the surface.
Work from the Highest Point
Start from the top of a slope (if your paving has one) and work downwards, so the dirty water flows away from cleaned areas.
Re-sand the Joints Afterwards
Once the paving is dry, sweep kiln-dried sand into the joints to keep the blocks stable and reduce the chance of weeds popping up.
Consider a Sealant
After cleaning and re-sanding, applying a quality paving sealant can help protect the surface from future stains, algae, and weed growth.
Alternative Cleaning Methods for Block Paved Drives and Patios
If you’d rather avoid jet washing, you can use a stiff brush and warm soapy water for a gentler clean. There are also specialist block paving cleaners available that tackle algae and moss without the need for high pressure.
Block Paved Driveways and Patios
Jet washing is a great way to revitalise block paving, but it needs to be done with care. When used correctly, it can restore your drive or patio to its former glory. Just remember to replace any lost sand and consider sealing the surface to make maintenance easier in the future.
