We all know how beautiful a freshly laid driveway can look, stopping passers-by with curb appeal, or how much looking out of your kitchen window at your newly laid patio can put a smile on your face. However, it’s what’s underneath that counts. Even the most stunning designs can be compromised without the installation of proper drainage. At Premier Surfacing, we are specialists in residential paving in Shropshire and Cheshire and we understand the importance of good drainage solutions for driveways and patios. Check out our guide below to find out what drainage in groundworks is for, what options you have if you’re thinking of a new driveway or patio, and how we can help you get the paving of your dreams.

What is Drainage in Groundworks?

Drainage in groundworks refers to the methods used to remove water from your driveway, patio, or any other commercial paving around your property. Sufficient drainage involves the design, excavation, and installation of drainage systems to effectively control the flow of water from heavy rainfall, melting snow, or even when you’ve washed your car.

Why is Proper Drainage Needed for Commercial Paving?

Sufficient drainage for your driveway or patio is essential for ensuring its longevity and functionality. With heavy rainfall in the UK common, it is even more important to ensure you have the right system in place beforehand. Some of the reasons drainage is so important include:
  • Preventing flooding from standing water which can cause structural damage and render your driveway unusable.
  • Prevents property damage by directing water away from your house and decreasing the risk of structural damage and damp issues.
  • Decreases the risk of erosion of your driveway or patio surface, which can lead to costly repairs and a not-so-good-looking house exterior.
  • Improves safety around your house, decreasing the risk of slipping or other accidents related to standing water.

Process: What’s Involved in Assessing the Drainage Solution Needed?

There are a number of factors that come into play when choosing the right drainage for commercial paving, these include:
  • Checking the Area to be Paved – whether it’s the front or back of the house, are there any slopes or gradients, existing water flow patterns, and soil conditions?
  • Type of Paving – certain drainage systems work better with specific types of paving.
  • Local Factors – rainfall patterns, soil type, etc. need to be taken into account.

What are the Drainage Options for Driveways and Patios?

There are several drainage solutions to choose from, depending on the type of paving you desire and the area to be paved. Below are some of the most common driveway and patio drainage solutions available today.

Channel Drains.

Channel drains are installed at the edge or middle of a driveway and are designed to capture surface water and direct it away. They are long and narrow and usually available in a variety of weight-load classes and are a great solution in preventing surface flooding.

Drainage Gates.

This type of drainage solution allows water to flow into pipes or channels by placement at strategic points on your driveway or patio. Drainage gates are connected to an underground drainage system and are highly effective at preventing surface water build-up.

French Drains.

French drains are comprised of a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe that collects water and directs it away from your driveway or patio. An excellent option for driveways built on slopes or that have poor soil drainage.

Gravel and Permeable Driveways.

Gravel driveways allow rainwater to seep through as it is a porous material. A permeable membrane or geotextile fabric placed underneath the gravel allows water infiltration and prevents weed growth.

Sloped Driveways.

Common with paving or concrete surfaces, a sloped driveway can encourage water to run off and into a designated drainage area.

Soakaways.

Used for driveways and patios, soakaways facilitate the controlled infiltration of surface water into an underground storage area, helping to prevent waterlogging, soil erosion, and potential damage to your property’s foundation.

Ditching and Landscaping.

Creating swales and ditches or grading the land can divert water away from driveways and patios and toward suitable drainage outlets.

When it comes to patio drainage, you want peace of mind that it will do its job and remain functioning in the years to come, after all, a flooded patio or driveway is something no one wants to deal with.  You may be wondering what a soakaway is and why they are so important when it comes to proper drainage systems around your home. In this article, we aim to explain the importance of sustainable drainage and the options you have when it comes to making the decision for suitable patio drainage.

What is a Soakaway?

Soakaways are an essential component of residential drainage systems that facilitate the controlled infiltration of surface water into the ground. These systems help prevent waterlogging, soil erosion, and potential damage to your property's foundation. An efficient soakaway will prevent waterlogging and disperse excess water into the ground. It’s a sustainable solution, promoting natural water infiltration and contributing to sustainable drainage practices, reducing the impact on local water systems. Some of the key features of soakaways are:
  • Versatility - soakaways are designed to accommodate various soil types and drainage needs.
  • Environmental Benefits - by allowing water to naturally infiltrate the soil, soakaways contribute to sustainable water management and reduce the burden on traditional drainage systems.
  • Cost-Effective – soakaways are a cost-effective solution for managing surface water on your property, requiring minimal maintenance once installed.

Factors for a Successful Soakaway Process.

Soakaways work well for patio drainage and driveways, where the water table or saturation line (the upper level of groundwater that is naturally held within the soil, sub-soil, or bedrock) is of a lesser volume. If the affected site has an exceptionally high water table near the surface, then soakaways will be rendered useless. In instances where the water table may be higher, possibly due to a layer of impermeable clay overlaying deeper strata, this can be dug through and the porous sub-strata reached, which will, in turn, make your soakaway feasible. Site Requirements. There are other site requirements that come into play when looking for suitable patio drainage solutions such as a soakaway, which are:
  • The site of the soakaway must be permanently above the water table.
  • Be sited in a spot lower than the area being drained.
  • It must be situated so that it will not saturate the foundations of any structure.
  • Be at least 5 metres away from any building (BS 8301).
  • Not be situated near risks of contamination from pollutants.
  • Must not be sited near another infiltration device so as not to impair the ground or the capacity of the other devices.

Alternative Options for Patio Drainage.

If a soakaway is not suitable for your specific patio drainage needs, there are other options available, in the form of SUDs and ACO Drains. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDs). SUDs are an innovative residential drainage solution designed to mimic natural water management processes. They are designed to seamlessly integrate with surrounding landscapes and help reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.  SUDs contribute to the preservation of local ecosystems by promoting natural drainage processes and minimising the impact of urban development on the environment. Integrating SUDs into residential areas can enhance our neighbourhoods and, many local authorities encourage or mandate the use of SUDs to meet regulatory requirements for sustainable development and water management. ACO Drains. ACO drains are a cutting-edge drainage solution designed to efficiently manage surface water. Characterised by a discreet and durable design that seamlessly integrates into the landscape, ACO drains are crafted from durable materials such as polymer concrete and stainless steel, ensuring longevity. They are also easily maintained and feature removable grates and access points, making cleaning and inspection a breeze. ACO drains effectively channel rainwater away from your property, preventing potential flooding and water damage and they are discreet which ensures they complement your landscaping. Lastly, ACO drains contribute to sustainable water management by efficiently collecting and redirecting surface water.

A well-constructed block paved driveway can really enhance the curb appeal of your home whilst at the same time providing a durable and functional surface to park your cars. However, something that people often overlook when having their driveway constructed is drainage. Proper residential drainage is very important for maintaining the longevity and integrity of your block paved driveway. Premier Surfacing is a residential and commercial surfacing and landscaping services throughout Shropshire, Telford, Shrewsbury, Cheshire, Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. As well as our surfacing services, we are also professional installers of drainage systems for block paved driveways, as well as all other types of driveway and patio. In this blog, we will discuss why you might need a drainage system for your block paved driveway and the benefits that proper drainage offer.

Why is drainage important for block paved driveways?

Preventing Water Accumulation

Without a proper drainage system, water can accumulate on your driveway, leading to pooling and potential flooding. This not only creates a messy and inconvenient environment but can also damage the paving over time. Water accumulation can weaken the base material, causing the pavers to shift, sink, or crack.

Protecting Your Property

Excess water on your driveway can also pose a risk to your property. Water can seep into the foundation of your home, leading to dampness, mould growth, and structural damage. A well-designed residential drainage system helps to redirect water away from your property, protecting its structural integrity.

Enhancing Safety

Standing water on a driveway can create slippery conditions, posing a hazard to both pedestrians and vehicles. By ensuring proper drainage, you can keep your driveway safe and reduce the risk of accidents.

Types of drainage systems for block paved driveways

Linear or Channel Drains

Linear drains, also known as channel drains, are a popular choice for block paved driveways. These drains are installed along the edges or across the driveway to collect and direct water to a suitable drainage outlet. They are effective in managing surface water and are available in various designs to complement the aesthetics of your driveway.

Soakaways

A soakaway is an underground structure that allows water to percolate into the ground, effectively managing excess surface water. Soakaways are ideal for areas with good soil permeability and can be used in conjunction with other drainage systems to enhance efficiency.

Permeable Paving

Permeable paving is a sustainable option that allows water to pass through the surface and infiltrate the ground below. This method reduces surface runoff and helps replenish groundwater. Permeable block pavers are designed with wider joints or porous materials, providing an eco-friendly drainage solution.

Do you need a drainage system for your driveway?

Assessing Your Driveway

A professional surfacing and landscaping company can assess your driveway and see if a drainage system is required. If you’re wondering whether you might require a drainage system, these points might give you some guidance:
  1. Slope and Gradient: If your driveway has a slope, water will naturally flow towards the lowest point. A drainage system can help manage this water and prevent erosion or pooling at the base of the slope.
  2. Soil Permeability: The type of soil beneath your driveway affects its ability to absorb water. Clay soils, for instance, have low permeability and can lead to waterlogging. In such cases, an efficient drainage system is essential.
  3. Local Climate: Areas that experience heavy rainfall or frequent storms benefit significantly from proper drainage systems to handle the excess water.
  4. Property Layout: The layout of your property, including the proximity of your driveway to your home and other structures, can influence the need for drainage. Ensuring water is directed away from buildings is crucial.

Benefits of Installing a Drainage System

  1. Longevity: Proper drainage extends the lifespan of your block paved driveway by preventing water damage and maintaining the stability of the paving.
  2. Aesthetic Appeal: A well-drained driveway looks clean and well-maintained, enhancing the overall appearance of your property.
  3. Property Value: Effective residential drainage systems can increase the value of your property by ensuring a durable and attractive driveway.
  4. Environmental Impact: Systems like permeable paving and soakaways promote sustainable water management, reducing the impact on local drainage systems and the environment.

Whether it’s a driveway, patio, or commercial space, surface water can cause damage over time. This is why proper drainage is essential for the longevity and functionality of any surface. If you’re concerned about surface water, one effective solution is the installation of ACO drains. Premier Surfacing is a residential and commercial surfacing and landscaping services throughout Shropshire, Telford, Shrewsbury, Cheshire, Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. As well as our surfacing services, we are also professional installers of ACO drains and other drainage systems. In this blog, we will explore what ACO drains are, where they should be placed, and when you might need one.

What is an ACO Drain?

ACO drains, also known as channel drains or linear drains, are drainage systems designed to efficiently manage surface water. These drains consist of a channel or trench with a grating on top, allowing water to flow into the drain while keeping debris out. The water collected is then directed to an appropriate drainage outlet, such as a soakaway or a stormwater system.

Key Features of ACO Drains

  • Durability: Made from materials such as polymer concrete or plastic, ACO drains are built to withstand heavy loads and harsh weather conditions.
  • Versatility: Available in various sizes and styles, these drains can be customised to suit different applications and aesthetic preferences.
  • Efficiency: The linear design ensures efficient water flow, reducing the risk of flooding and water pooling.

Where Should ACO Drains Be Placed?

Proper placement of ACO drains is essential to maximise their effectiveness. Here are some common areas where we would typically instal these types of drains:

Driveways and Garage Entrances

ACO drains are often placed at the entrance of driveways and garages to prevent rainwater from flowing into these areas. This helps in maintaining a dry and safe environment, reducing the risk of damage to vehicles and property.

Patios and Outdoor Areas

In outdoor spaces such as patios, gardens, and pool decks, ACO drains can effectively manage surface water, preventing waterlogging and ensuring a comfortable environment for outdoor activities.

Commercial and Industrial Areas

In commercial and industrial settings, ACO drains are used to manage large volumes of water. These drains are essential in areas like parking lots, loading bays, and warehouses to prevent flooding and maintain safety standards.

Walkways and Footpaths

Installing ACO drains along walkways and footpaths helps to keep these areas dry and safe for pedestrians, reducing the risk of slips and falls.

When Do You Need an ACO Drain?

Determining the need for an ACO drain depends on several factors, including the layout of your property, local climate conditions, and specific drainage requirements. If you’re wondering whether you might require an ACO drain, we’ve highlighted some scenarios when an ACO drain might be necessary:

Frequent Water Accumulation

If you notice frequent pooling or flooding in certain areas of your property, it might be a sign that the existing drainage system is inadequate. Installing ACO drains can help manage the excess water and prevent damage to your property.

Heavy Rainfall

Properties in regions with heavy rainfall can benefit significantly from ACO drains. These drains can handle large volumes of water, directing it away from vulnerable areas and preventing potential flooding.

Sloped Surfaces

On sloped surfaces, water tends to flow downhill, often accumulating at the lowest points. Installing ACO drains at strategic locations can capture and redirect this water, preventing erosion and water damage.

Building Regulations and Compliance

In some cases, local building regulations may require the installation of adequate drainage systems to manage surface water. ACO drains are an effective solution to meet these requirements and ensure compliance.

Protecting Structures

Installing ACO drains around the perimeter of buildings can protect foundations and walls from water damage. By preventing water from accumulating near the structure, you can avoid issues such as dampness, mould growth, and structural damage.
