With autumn approaching and winter soon to follow, it’s time to give your driveway a quick once over, and have a little check just to see if it needs some TLC. Driveways that have been installed by experienced surfacing specialists will last for years, but eventually even the best driveways will need some due care and attention. So here’s how you can determine whether yours needs some care, with these tell-tale signs…

Un-appealing aesthetics

One of the most obvious signs that your driveway needs some more care and attention, is if it’s aesthetic appeal has dropped a little. Ask yourself, does it look good? What does it look like from the curb?  Sometimes it can help to look at it as if it wasn’t your home, and ask yourself what you’d think of it. If it’s looking worn or is showing some minor cracks, this can be hugely detrimental to the curb appeal of your property, not to mention the overall look of your home. Perhaps the surface has faded from the sunlight, or is uneven in parts, if so this can be a sign of problems beneath the surface of the driveway. If it’s not looking aesthetically pleasing, you deserve a driveway that does, so it’s probably time for a new one.

Potholes have appeared

With certain driveway surfaces, such as asphalt, potholes can start to form as the surface begins to age. This happens when the ground underneath eventually becomes weaker, as a result of consistently expanding and contracting over time. Using vehicles a lot on the surface can also contribute to this. Potholes can look terrible but they are also dangerous, and can turn into a serious hazard for those walking on the driveway. Opting to repave the driveway can easily solve this problem.

Pools of water are gathering

If you notice that after heavy rainfall, there’s been an accumulation of water and pool forming on your driveway, it’s important to know that this isn’t normal. Pools of water forming is a sure sign that there are underlying problems and drainage issues. So it’s essential that this is addressed as soon as possible, as issues, especially with drainage, can soon escalate and cause further damage that can spread to your whole property.

Your driveway is fairly old

If your driveway is more than twenty five years old, and you've never had it repaved or had maintenance carried out, then the chances are it’s time that you did. Every driveway will have a maximum driveway, no matter the surface, even if they are well maintained with a seal coating etc.  If your driveway is showing any of these signs, and you’re considering a repave for your driveway surface, or you’re simply looking for a reputable surfacing specialists who can help you get your dream driveway - contact Premier Surfacing today on 01952 840 838.

Your driveway isn’t simply a spot to park your vehicle, it’s actually one of the key focal points of your home. In fact, it occupies a prominent position in any property, as it’s predominantly one of the first things people see and notice about your home.  This is why you need to ensure that your driveway is looking its best, as not only will this maximise your kerb appeal, it can actually add value to your property. So, having a robust, resilient and functional driveway is always a good idea. With this in mind, we’ve got some great driveway ideas right here to get you inspired.

Block paving can be traditionally trendy

Block paving is a very popular choice of driveway surface, and is used for many driveway designs. The reason for this is because it’s actually incredibly versatile. It can provide you with a traditional aged look that also gives off a timeless elegance to your property. This type of surface also complements most types of brickwork in a nicely understated way.

Set your driveway up with stone

Concrete and tarmac are also popular surface options for driveways, but stone is also standing out more and more as both a traditional driveway option, and one that can look quite modern too. Stone has longevity as it’s extremely hard-wearing and can make any property seem all the more majestic.

Getting a brand new driveway surfaced is a great way to improve the front of your property and add value to it as well. However, before you start looking at any ideas to improve your driveway, it’s important to keep yourself up to date with the latest legislation…

Driveway legislation

Legislation when it comes to driveways exists in order to help reduce the risk of flooding and its potential impacts. Essentially, if you have a new driveway that measures over 5m2, you must be able to provide a drainage system for the water to run to a permeable area. If it doesn’t have this, you will have to acquire planning permission.

The UK of course sees a fair amount of rainfall, and the risk of flooding to street drains and driveways can be a big problem. Thankfully, there are drainage options out there which are both innovative and sustainable, and that also can suit your budget.

So let’s take a look at a couple of examples to help you comply with the legislation.

Get the drainage down

There’s a few options out there to ensure you have good drainage for your driveway. Keep in mind though that if you don’t use permeable surface material, you still have to make sure that any rainwater that falls on your driveway is directed back onto the surrounding land and not into the drainage system. You can achieve this by opting for thing like concrete units that can complement your driveway surface, while creating an integral channel which directs rainwater runoff away into a suitable soak-up area around your property.

Opt for permeable paving

Another solution to help you comply with legislation is to choose permeable paving options as your driveway surface. Permeable surface material will eliminate the need to have additional drainage and you won’t need to gain additional planning permission either.

Permeable paving is designed so that rainwater can seep through to the ground below, without overloading the drains on your street. This type of paving can look great, be cost effective and help to reduce the risk of flooding. This type of driveway can be made up of a cement mix or bricks that can allow water to run through the cracks.

At Premier Surfacing, we have years of industry experience that can be applied to helping you find the ideal driveway. Our staff are happy to answer any questions you have and will be there to help every step of the way. For more information get in touch on 01952 840 838.
